John Wooden

Mick Ukleja has had the privilege of interviewing Coach John Wooden on his 96th birthday. Wooden was a legendary coach, prolific author, and inspiring speaker who dedicated his life to motivating individuals to achieve their highest potential.

As coach at the University of California at Los Angeles, he was nicknamed the “Wizard of Westwood,”. He won ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period, including a record seven in a row. Within this period, his teams won an NCAA men’s basketball record 88 consecutive games. He was named national coach of the year six times.

Wooden was renowned for his short, simple inspirational messages to his players, including his “Pyramid of Success.”

His 29-year coaching career and overwhelmingly positive critical acclaim have created a legacy of great interest in not only sports, but in business, personal success, and organizational leadership as well. The “John and Nell Wooden Ethics in Leadership Award” is presented by the Ukleja Center for Ethical Leadership at California State University, Long Beach, to a worthy recipient each year.
